One of the first fortified medieval town houses in Ireland, it was the property of the rich mercantile Taaffe family who became Earls of Carlingford in 1661. It consisted of comfortable living quarters on the upper floors and a trading depot on the ground floor, which opened directly onto the old harbour and shoreline.

Originally owned by spirit grocer P J O'Hare, this famous oyster bar and restaurant is the quintessential Irish pub with character.

At 7.45pm on Monday 16 August 1993, I dropped in to PJ's to watch Sonia O'Sullivan running in the final of the 3000 metres Women's Final of the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart. Standing in front of me at the small bar, eyes focused on the same television, was Beirut hostage Brian Keenan whose autobiography 'An Evil Cradling', published in 1992, won The Irish Times' non-fiction award in 1993. How P J O'Hare, a renowned raconteur who passed away in 1991, would have appreciated the company of such a distinguished customer.
